The holidays are over, the kids are back in school and the hum drum of getting back to “real life” has set in. Often this time of year feels a bit of a let-down. Well, luckily we have Sacramento Museum Day to look forward to!
Now in it’s 14th year, Sacramento Museum Day has a record 28 area museums participating in offering the public either FREE or 1/2 price admission all day on Saturday, February 4th. There are two new additions this year, the Sacramento Children’s Museum (yay!) and The Center for Contemporary Art. Also be aware that the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town are offering 1/2 off, rather than free admission this year.
For the past several years, my family has taken advantage of this opportunity to visit some of our favorite Sacramento area museums and we plan on going out again this year. I’m not going to lie to you though…it’s a bit crowded out there and things can get a little crazy. Here are my tips and recommendations for having a fun and successful day out with your kids.
PLAN YOUR DAY. My advice is to choose just one or two museums to visit with the kids rather than trying to hit several just because they are free. This way you can allow yourself time to enjoy your visits without being on a strict time schedule. If you do plan to visit more than one or two, take into consideration parking issues and walking distances. In years past, there has been free shuttle service between many of the museums, unfortunately shuttle service is not being offered this year.
GO EARLY. I can’t stress this enough. Most museums open at 10am and I suggest arriving right at opening. The crowds really start coming in droves by noon, so it’s nice to have a couple of hours before things start getting crazy, especially if you have tiny kids to keep track of.
HAVE FUN. The best thing about Museum Day is that you can take your kiddos to a museum you have not visited before and if it doesn’t turn out to be a place they love, no sweat. You haven’t spent a fortune on admission fees, so no need to feel stressed if you don’t get around to see everything. Just head on over to another museum and give that one a try!
One of the great things about Museum Day is that many of the museums offer special children’s activities for the day. For instance, both the Aerospace Museum and the California Automobile Museum offer kids craft tables with coloring pages, paper folding crafts, and more.
Sacramento Museum Day is very much a family event and such a great opportunity to visit any of our wonderful area museums that you may not have had a chance to see, yet. It’s also a perfect, stress-free way to introduce your kids to what our city has to offer. So, do a little bit of planning ahead and then go out there and have a wonderful Museum Day!
