8/3 – Zoo Night with the Sacramento River Cats – The Sacramento River Cats players will wear special animal print jerseys as Raley Field raises money for The Sacramento Zoo with an in-game autographed jersey auction. Be greeted by the Zoomobile on Ballpark Drive and receive zoo discounts by visiting on the concourse. It will also be Family Value Night so enjoy $1 hot dogs and $1 desserts with the family. The River Cats will be playing the Memphis Redbirds in this baseball game.
8/3 – Crocker Family Friday: Purple at the Crocker Art Museum – For this Family Friday, kids can proudly parade in purple, the color of royalty. Hear Teresa Cheung sweep soothing sounds on her elegant harp, and learn the graceful art of ballet during an introductory children’s dance session with Vanessa Bautista with the Sacramento Ballet’s Dance Education Training Program.
8/4 – Screen on the Green: Madagascar at the South Natomas Community Center – Councilman Steve Cohn and Pops in the Park are pleased to present the 2012 Screen on the Green movie series, featuring Madagascar (Rated PG) at South Natomas Park. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating and snacks.
8/4 – Car Cruise at the California Automobile Museum – The 4th Annual CAM Car Cruise, hosted by the California Automobile Museum (CAM), will be a fun-filled day for the whole family as they cruise through the streets of Sacramento (beginning from Sacramento State) and along Fulton Avenue where they will conclude with a huge car show on Fulton between El Camino and Marconi. Attendees are encouraged to enjoy the local fares of Fulton Avenue merchants, plus there will have a beer garden, live bands, vendors, and more! Musical guest is Todd Morgan & The Emblems.
8/4 – Flying High at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Walk the nature preserve with a naturalist to discover the many species of birds that use this area. You many want to bring a pair of binoculars, because there is sure to be a lot to see!
8/4-5 – Rocks Rock! At the Discovery Museum – Become a geologist this weekend at the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center. Each guest 12 and under constructs a take home mini rock starter kit. Three basic rock types are given out. Learn about these rocks and more in the Blast from the Past exhibit. Rock fun for everyone!
8/4-5 – Festa Italiana – This is Sacramento’s Super Italian Festival. Come enjoy great music, singers, and dancers from Italy. Of course there will be great Italian food by some of Sacramento’s best Italian restaurants. Take a stroll in the Italian marketplace and shop for traditional Italian products, free food tasting, Italian jewlery, art, and much more. There will also be games and activities for children. Don’t forget about Saturday night dancing under the moon. Fantastico!
8/4-5 – Spider Spectacular at Explorit – Explorit Science Center will be hosting two Family Exploration weekends all about spiders in conjunction with their pilot Community Science Project, “Spiders in Your World”.
Hands-on, minds-on is how they like to do things at Explorit. During Family Exploration events you will get a chance to climb through a spider’s web, eat the way a spider does, make a spider saver, cook up an edible spider, and spin your own web! Can you make a spider with recycled materials? We challenge you!
Special guests from the UC Davis Entomology Club will be on hand to share their expertise. So go ahead, ask lots of questions and find out everything you want to know. There is a great deal to learn about these wonderful animals, and you may be surprised at how much false information about spiders has been buzzing around in your head.
8/5 – Kids Day at Fairytale Town – Join Fairytale Town as they celebrate National Kids Day with a day of family fun! Kids Day is an opportunity to celebrate childhood and for adults to spend meaningful play time with their children.
Fairytale Town joins in this national celebration with carnival games, arts and crafts activities, live music, and more. Performances include the Freebadge Serenaders, Ricky Berger, and Musical Charis all on the Mother Goose Stage. Join the fun and help celebrate children and the importance of play!
8/5 – Children’s Concert Series at Fairytale Town – Join Fairytale Town and local performing artists for rockin’ matinee concerts on the Mother Goose Stage this summer. It’s music and fun for the whole family! Blankets are encouraged. The series wraps up with a day of fun, games, and music on National Kids Day with performances by Freebadge Serenaders and Musical Charis.
8/5 – Family Concert: Octopretzel at the Crocker – Octopretzel inspires wonder and appreciation for nature and our world through music from many cultures. Best described as folk music, Octopretzel crosses generations and genres, weaving together styles such as bluegrass, rock ‘n roll, lullabies, and nursery rhymes. Their shows integrate elements of many cultures such as African drumming, Klezmer fiddling, Middle Eastern percussion and singing styles, and songs with words in Spanish, Hebrew, and even Quechua. Enjoy a danceable, singable, and exuberantly whimsical experience for the whole family.
