Memorial Day Weekend Activities
It’s Memorial Day weekend and you’ll want to get out and enjoy it! The Sacramento Music Festival will be going strong all weekend long, as well as the Sacramento County Fair, where kids 12 and younger are FREE! You might want to head over to William Land Park for the International Children’s Festival, or cruise the Sacramento River aboard the Hornblower. On Monday, take advantage of the FREE Family Palooza Festival at the Crocker. There is so much to do…take a look at our list before you make your final plans.
5/23 – Sacramento River Cats vs. the New Orleans Zephyrs – Come out to enjoy a great game of baseball as the Sacramento River Cats take on the New Orleans Zephyrs.
5/23-27 – Sacramento County Fair – Celebrate Memorial Day weekend at the Sacramento County Fair—a fun, affordable, and safe event for the whole family! The community enjoys the Sacramento County Fair’s friendly atmosphere, traditional county fair competitions, agriculture displays, hands-on family activities, carnival, festival-style entertainment, and specialty foods. Kids 12 years and younger are free!
5/24-25 – The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley – Just when ten-year-old Stanley Lambchop tires of being the most ordinary boy around, a nighttime accident leaves him flat—”really” flat. The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr. follows the beloved, 2-D character from Jeff Brown’s classic children’s book in a whirlwind travel adventure. From Hollywood to France to Honolulu, music and magic accompany this paper-thin boy as Flat Stanley searches for a solution to his unique problem.

5/24-27 – Sacramento Music Festival – Get ready to dance in the streets of Old Sacramento morning, noon, and night when the Sacramento Music Festival celebrates 40 amazing years of world-class musical entertainment! Sure to delight music lovers of all ages, headliners for the 40th anniversary event include Los Lobos, Kenny Wayne Shepard Band, Ben Taylor, The Blasters, John Lee Hooker Jr., The James Hunter Six, Wanda Jackson, Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, Jimmy Pailer, Johnny “Guitar” Knox, and Beer Dawgs, to name a few.
5/25 – 9th Annual International Kids Festival – Come partake in a great way to celebrate Memorial Day with family and friends at no cost with lots of fun as well as exciting things to see and do. Be sure to enjoy the stage entertainment program, professional magician show, face painting, jump houses, and lots of fun and prizes, including activities for the
5/25 – Critter Corner at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Where do our animals come from? Why are they here? Meet a couple of small animal residents at the Nature Center up close. Learn about each of their unique journeys and how they became an educational ambassador for the Nature Center. All ages welcome
5/25 -26 – Fairytale Town Puppet Festival – Fairytale Town brings you another season of playful puppetry! Children and adults can enjoy live puppet show performances inside Fairytale Town’s Children’s Theater. This year’s festival features six original roductions based on new and traditional fairytales.
5/25-27 – Sensational Space Stamping at the Discovery Museum – Having a stay-cation over the holiday weekend?
Come out and explore the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center! There is a lot happening this weekend to entertain the entire family. Visit their Space Quest! exhibit, make a space banner with ink stamps (ages 0-12) and learn
about a live animal at Noon or 2pm (all ages). This is the last weekend of the special planetarium show, Dance of the Planets, at 1pm or 3pm (ages 4+). Guests are welcome to enjoy their picnic lunches on the grounds.
5/26 – Vettes for Vets – This is an annual car show arranged by the California Automobile Museum as memorial to military veterans and Corvettes. Veterans will enjoy over 50 raffle prizes, food trucks coordinated by Sacto MoFo, and music. The car show is also free for spectators and is an excellent event for kids. Come out and enjoy the sun gleaming off the gorgeous Corvettes!
5/26 – Reading of the Names: Memorial Day at Capitol Park – Please join in honoring and remembering those California Vietnam Veterans who were killed in the Vietnam War, as well as Veterans from all wars, all services, and those currently serving at this Reading of the Names in honor of Memorial Day. Vietnam Veterans, family, friends, and the public are all invited to attend.
The California Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located in the State Capitol grounds at 15th & L Streets.
5/27 – Color Me Rad – Color Me Rad Sacramento benefits the Special Olympics. The Color Bombs start flying at 9am with waves of runners getting plastered with color every five minutes after. You’ll end up looking like a kindergarten art class gone wrong, but the Art of Running will make you feel oh so right.
What do you get besides a run? We have been told we have the best run package around. You get a nice participant shirt (comfy and not one with 25 sponsors on it), a pair of neon ’80s glasses to protect those eyes during the run, a “rad” tattoo, and more. Don’t forget to like Color Me Rad on Facebook for race updates and to win sweet stuff like Camelbacks, running shoes, hoodies, and free entries.
5/27 – Holiday Monday: Family Palooza at the Crocker Art Museum – Come enjoy music by Frankie and the Fabletones, the Hipwaders, and Sacramento Philharmonic’s “WolfGANG!” Learn new dance moves at a Pepper Von Production featuring Step 1 Dancers and Corina Bianca. Pose for a fun family portrait and create your own art.
In the spirit of “it takes a village,” bring a donation of diapers or wipes for the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services’ Parent Education Program. The Museum will be open and free from 10am-5pm for the Holiday Monday. Holiday Mondays are sponsored by Target.
5/27 – Hornblower Memorial Day Cruise – Come aboard for a Memorial Day River Cruise on the Sacramento River. This one hour river cruise is the perfect way to cool down while learning about the history of Sacramento and the nature of the water ways. Come aboard this Memorial Day with your family!
5/27 – Wounded Veteran Run – The area’s fastest growing run is the 3rd Annual Wounded Veteran Run, presented by Aerojet. The courses follow the beautiful Folsom Parkway Trails and include a 3K walk, a 5K run/walk, a 10K run, and the newly added Kids Fun Run. All Kids Fun Run finishers will receive an award for participation. Runners will enjoy custom T-shirts, the wonderful scenery, and, most of all, the lack of monstrous hills.
