What’s on your schedule this weekend? The weather is going to be close to perfect – for an overnight safari at the Sacramento Zoo, a music festival at Fairytale Town or for banana lovers, stop by the Banana Festival for some special treats. 8/9 – Family Overnight Safari – This fun-filled educational evening will guide you through all that the nighttime Zoo has to offer. These camp-outs are designed for small groups. This is a perfect opportunity to see animal behaviors you may not have seen before. Dinner and breakfast are provided. During this Overnight Safari you will: take a nighttime tour of the Zoo; watch the Overnight Safari Leaders give special animal feedings, talks, and even help make one of the animal’s special treats; enjoy a tasty dinner; meet Animal Ambassadors up close and personal; gather around the campfire for songs, stories, and snacks; listen to the sounds of the wild as you fall asleep under the stars; and the next morning get the chance to explore the Zoo in the daytime!
8/9 – Dive-in Movie: Brave at Fulton-El Camino Recreation and Park District – Enjoy an evening swim. Bring a picnic dinner, popcorn, or purchase available concessions, then settle in for the evening to enjoy a screening of Brave. Grass seating will be available, so bring blankets to sit on. Please no glass in the pool area. Guests will also be able to help choose the next week’s movie.
8/9 – Family Friday: Gold Day at the Crocker Art Museum – Join other families in the E. Kendell Davis Courtyard for music, art-making, and good old-fashioned fun. Help us wrap up Family Fridays with a mesmerizing performance by youth dancers from Kalanjali Dances of India! Picnic fare and artfully educational toys will be available for purchase in the courtyard.
8/9 – 8/11 – Cat & the Fiddle Music Festival at Fairytale Town – Hey diddle, diddle! Join Fairytale Town as they celebrate music and fun in the summer sun with a three-day music festival. Mumbo Gumbo, the Keri Carr Band, Joy and Madness, and more of your favorite local bands will take to the Mother Goose Stage for live evening concerts. The kiddos will enjoy rockin’ daytime children’s concerts featuring the Raytones, Two in Tune: Sacramento Opera and Philharmonic, and more on Saturday and Sunday.
8/9 – 8/11 – Beauty and the Beast Jr. at the Sierra 2 Center – Step into the enchanted world of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. featuring songs from the Academy-Award winning animated feature. Be transported to the heart of provincial life in a lovely French town. When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice’s daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle’s taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation back into a handsome prince is a beloved fairy tale about very different people finding strength in one another and learning how to love
8/10 – Outdoor Movie Night: Toy Story 3 – : Calvine Storage Kings in Elk Grove is offering another summer of FREE outdoor movies. We had so much fun the last few years that we want to do it again. But this year, we’ve made it even better. There will be food available courtesy of FOODMOB, as well as free popcorn, so you definitely don’t want to miss out on this fun-filled event! Come early to setup your chairs and enjoy the pre-show food. We’ll see you there!
8/10 – Sacramento Valley Otter Project at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Learn about these playful carnivores and how to recognize their scat and tracks. Put these new skills to work by learning how you can help the research process that will further the understanding of our local river otters.
8/10 – Screen on the Green: 101 Dalmatians at Glenn Hall Park – Come out to Screen on the Green, brought to you by Councilman Steve Cohn and Pops in the Park. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating or a lawn chair for seating, and snacks. A sweatshirt for the cooler evening weather and a flashlight are also recommended.
8/10 – Twilight Open Cockpit Day at the California Aerospace Museum – Pilot Your own Adventure! Radio Disney will be on hand to help celebrate Twilight Open Cockpit. Put yourself in the pilot’s seat and climb aboard the cockpit of one of the Museum’s planes. Come join in and get excited for the upcoming new Disney Planes movie in theatres August 9th. Fly by the Aerospace Museum of California for music, fun and prizes provided by the Radio Disney Road Crew.
8/10-8/11 – National Smile Week Celebration at the Discovery Museum – Flash your smile this weekend at the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center because they are celebrating National Smile Week. Make A Smile Dentistry is here to hand out goodies. These dental pros are leading a Tooth Fairy program about dental health. Once the kids learn about healthy teeth they craft a fun take home project to remember the day.
8/10 – 8/11 – 4th Annual Banana Festival – The Banana Festival returns to Sacramento for their fourth year! The yellow fruit has become a star for this festival that finds everything about this yellow fruit “a-peeling.” It is served up in main entrees, beverages, breakfasts, and desserts. It’s the center of contest and the theme of the 5K run.
8/11 – Kestrel Connection at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Meet Rocky, the Nature Center’s resident Kestrel, hear his story and what makes him North America’s smallest falcon. After a good look at this handsome bird, make a Kestrel bracelet to remember your new friend. All ages welcome.
8/11 – Peter and the Wolf at Fairytale Town – Can there be a more magical place to introduce your children to the thrilling world of opera than Sacramento’s Fairytale Town? Then WolfGANG!, Sacramento Philharmonic’s superb woodwind ensemble, performs Prokofiev’s delightful Peter and the Wolf, narrated by Education Director Julian Dixon. Smiles are guaranteed with this charming musical gift for youngsters of all ages. Presented by the Sacramento Opera Association.
