It’s hard to believe that it’s almost May- those “spring showers will be bring some May flowers” and it also brings us a time to celebrate the most important people in the world- MOMS! Not only is Mother’s Day around the corner- but so is summer. And that means for a lot of us, we are kicking up our fitness programs and trying to shed some of that winter weight or just trying to commit to those New Year’s Resolutions of living a healthier lifestyle. If this sounds familiar, then skip the usual Sunday Mother’s Day brunches and sign up with your mom or kids for one of Sacramento’s upcoming races.

We are lucky, as Sacramento may be considered a runners dream! Everywhere you go- whether it’s the parks downtown, along the scenic river trails, up in the mountainous hills, or just alongside the suburban sidewalks- you will see runners everywhere. It may be our climate, the terrain or just the scenery- but, it seems as if Sacramento is a place where you can just lace up your shoes…and run!

Every month in Sacramento there is some sort of running or walking event to participate in.  It can be something crazy such as the “Zombie Run”, as colorful as the “Color Run” or as dirty as the “Tough Mudder”.  But one thing is for sure- there is something for everyone and every age!  It’s a great way to teach children about health and get them excited about exercise… and this month, it’s a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day by doing something healthy and active together.

There are a couple runs/walks that are coming to town that caught my eye for “Moms” of all ages.  The first one is “Run like a Mother” on Sunday, May 11. This is an annual race that takes place in cities across the country on Mother’s Day. There is a 1 mile Kids race and a 5K, women’s only race that will go through the city of Davis. This run is stroller friendly and a great way to celebrate moms across the city.

On Saturday, May 10 join others in support of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. This event is widely popular and will take place at Cal Expo. You can run (or walk) the 5K or 10K course in support of those who are fighting or who have fought the battle against breast cancer.

In Folsom on May 11, there is a Mother’s Day Triathlon, Duathlon and Free 1 mile family fun. This event will take place at Granite Beach, Folsom Lake. This is not an event for the “casual runner”- I would suggest training more in advance for this course!

And on May 17, girls of all ages can participate in the “Girls on the Run Spring 5K”. This is an organization that inspires girls to be “joyful, healthy and confident by using fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running”. Girls of all ages can participate in the run, but the organization is geared for girls in the 3rd-8th grade. Check their website for locations or more information near you.

Saturday, May 17, you can join families at the west steps of the Capitol for a free family event and walk to create awareness for those children living with Cystic Fibrosis- Sacramento Great Strides. Kids will enjoy meeting “Mr. Jelly Belly”, “Dinger” from the Rivercats, Ronald McDonald, “Jack the Dog” and many, many more. There will also be live entertainment throughout the day- this will be an event not to miss!

So, if you are an avid runner, a running novice, or someone who hasn’t laced up their running shoes in a while….there is something for everyone, and especially for Moms this month in Sacramento. So lace up and get ready to support some great causes!
