The Nimbus Fish Hatchery, located at 2001 Nimbus Road in Rancho Cordova is an educational, fun and FREE family outing on a beautiful spring day.
Bring your bikes and start off by taking a ride along the American River Bike Trail that runs adjacent to the hatchery. There are plenty of picturesque spots to stop off at for a snack and to let the kids explore nature along the trail (be mindful of the bikers though, it can become very busy this time of year).
If biking isn’t your “thing”, then take a stroll around the hatchery and learn about the biology of salmon, hatchery operations and river conservation through interactive exhibits in the Visitors Center. You can even watch egg- taking on the Spawning Deck through the viewing window in the visitor’s center (depending on the time of the year).
If you have little ones, then check out their toddler time every Monday and Tuesday morning at 10:30 beginning on March 23rd, a popular story time for kids ages 1-4. They will enjoy songs, stories, crafts, activities, nature exploration and even fish feeding!
Here is a schedule of some of their upcoming topics:
March 23/24: I Love Bugs!
March 30/31: In Our Garden
April 6/7: The Incredible Egg
April 13 (No Session on April 14): Spiders are Special
April 20/21: Loving Earth, Our Home
April 27/28: Frogs are Fabulous!
So pack a lunch, some bikes or a stroller and head out to the Nimbus Fish Hatchery for some fun and educational family time with your little ones. You will be amazed at the beauty and natural resources right in our own backyards!
