The California Capital Airshow will have you Flying High in Sacramento

The California Capital Airshow (scroll down for information on winning tickets) will kick off its 10-year anniversary with a special nighttime performance, Airshow After Dark, at Sacramento’s Mather Airport on Oct. 2, 2015.

“As the sun sets on Friday, October 2, the skies over Mather Airport will ignite with a feast for the senses as thrilling jets and aerobatics performers light up the sky with streaming flares, showers of colorful bursts from their wings and thundering pyrotechnics. These phenomenal performances will be skillfully choreographed to awesome concert quality music with a fiery grand finale – it’s nothing like the Sacramento region has ever seen or heard before!”

If you can’t make it to the nighttime event, don’t worry. This year’s daytime shows, Oct. 3 – 4, will be just as exciting. Spectators will witness military jet demonstrations, USAF Thunderbirds, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, as well as aerobatics, pyrotechnics, barnstorming and plenty of ground entertainment, music, food and exhibits. Got kids? There will be plenty to keep kids of all ages busy, as well. Teens can stop by the Launch Pad to experience interactive games and demonstrations as they learn more about the latest aircraft innovations. Younger children can learn, explore and play at the Kids Zone. This interactive exhibit, hosted by the Sacramento Children’s Museum, will have inflatables and interactive exhibits for the younger kids, free with admission to the airshow. Guests of all ages will enjoy getting up and close and personal to the aircraft and pilots.

9/5 – 9/6 – Beauty and the Beast Jr. – Step into the enchanted world of Disney, with a twist, in Beauty and the Beast, Jr., where child actors Ages 5-18 step into the roles made famous by the animated movie. This show features original music from composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, plus new songs contributed by Tim Rice.

9/6 – Fishing in the City at Howe Park – FEC and Fishing in the City are excited about the catfish season! At the Howe Park Pond, Fishing in the City is providing free loan of rods, bait, and tackle for up to 50 people and free instructional clinics. 9/6 – Walk on the Wild Side at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Tiptoe like coyote through the trails in hopes of sneaking a peek at deer, turkey, woodpeckers and other wild neighbors on this outdoor adventure.

9/6 – Sacramento Fire Station Open House at Station 4 – The Sacramento Fire Department will begin hosting Fire Station Open Houses on Saturdays starting in May. Bring your family and friends to visit with firefighters, take a tour of the fire station, get an up-close look at a fire engine, and more!

9/6 – 25th Annual Sacramento Polish Festival – Now in its 25th year, this cultural festival will feature authentic Polish food and beer, live Polka music, performances from the Lowiczanie Polish Folk Ensemble, games for children, raffles and more.

9/6 – 9/7 – 9th Annual California Capital Airshow – The 9th Annual California Capital Airshow will be roaring across the skies of our region again this year. The event will offer spine-tingling performances including an international jet team, military demonstrations, world-class aerobatics, wingsuit flyers, barnstorming, wing walking, and endless entertainment and displays along the ramp. Nearly all never before seen in the Sacramento region. Arrive early to explore aircraft displays, interactive exhibits, and the Kids Zone.

9/6 – 9/7 – Animal Antics at the Discovery Museum – Have you ever wondered why animals do what they do? Well, perhaps Discovery can help answer your questions. This weekend, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows from the Animal Behavior Graduate Group at UC Davis present short overviews of their own research which is being done all over the U.S. Their research covers a wide variety of animals, including birds — greater sage grouse, tree swallows, cross bills, and dark-eyed juncos — primates (rhesus macaques), and even elephants! They’ll also have games, which demonstrate key principles of animal behavior

9/7 – Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival at Sleep Train Arena – Disney hits are remixed with the hottest sounds of today featuring hip hop, pop, swing, reggae, rock, country, and much more! Mickey Mouse and friends rock the world with the stars from The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story in their new touring show Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival. The irresistible lineup of performers, including Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Ariel, Sebastian, Ursula, Jasmine, Aladdin, Genie, Woody, Buzz, and Jessie are among the more than 25 Disney stars featured in this jam session fit for the entire family!

9/7 – Grandparent’s Day at Fairytale Town – Celebrate National Grandparents Day with a play day at Fairytale Town! Bring the grandparents and enjoy some fun in the sun. On this special day, the amusement park offers free admission to grandparents when accompanied with a child (Ages 0-12).

9/7 – Coyote Tales at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Join for a Native American story about Coyote, and then get a close-up look at a coyote pelt, skull, and mounted specimen. Space is limited and sign-ups are taken the day of the event. They recommend arriving 30 minutes prior to start time.

9/7 – Renowned Silhouette Artist Karl Johnson – Third Generation Silhouette Artist Karl Johnson will be at Pottery Barn Kids to create hand cut silhouettes. Each one is a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork, cut freehand and takes just minutes. All ages are welcome including the squirmy ones! Cost is $25 per silhouette and a reservation is highly recommended. Karl’s work has been featured in over 30 magazines including The O List in Oprah Magazine, People, and Elle Decor.

Are your kids (husbands or yourself) fascinated with the aeronautical wonders in the sky? Do you have future pilots zipping and zooming around the house? If so- then mark your calendars for the ninth annual California Capital Airshow , presented by Sacramento County and held at Mather Airfield on September 6-7.  You will experience all things shiny, fast and loud!  Spine-tingling military and civilian jet performance, thrilling aerobatics, barnstorming, pyrotechnics, vintage aircraft, music choreography and more!

Kids of all ages will be amazed at the demonstrations, interactive exhibits and shows that are scheduled to appear this year. Some of the events that can be seen include the USAF F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, the Patriots Jet Demonstration Team with aerobatic maneuvers, opportunities to explore aircraft both inside and out and even meet some of the pilots and crew members!

Established in 2004, the California Capital Air show is one of the largest and highly respected air shows in the nation, and we are very lucky to have it hosted in our Sacramento area.  As part of its community relations this non-profit organizations has awarded over 80 scholarships to deserving students from our region with an interest in aviation, aerospace, aeronautics and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related fields.

Located at the Mather Airport, it’s just 10 miles outside of downtown Sacramento at 10510 Superfortress Avenue in Mather.  The show will run from 9am-5pm and admission can be purchased in advance or at the gates. The general admission prices for adults 12 and over is $20 at the door, pre sale $15.  Children ages 6-12 is $10 or $7.50 presale and children 5 and under are free.

There is a $10 parking fee (CASH only) or you can purchase a prepaid parking pass on their website (if you are like me I would buy the prepaid pass, since I never seem to have cash on hand!).

If you are planning on attending this exciting fun-filled event here are a few tips to keep in mind:

* Wear Comfortable Shoes… lots of walking and asphalt…forgo the desire to “look cute” and dress for comfort today! * Don’t forget the sunscreen and umbrella to protect you from the sun. * Bring CASH for parking and concession purchases (they will have ATM’s inside- but no one wants to pay the bank service fees). * Bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to the noise…there will be LOTS of noise. *Don’t forget your camera for those great once in a lifetime shots!

Weekend Family Fun For September 7-9th

9/6-9 – Barnum & Bailey Circus at Power Balance Pavilion – Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents Dragons, a once in a millennium event that honors the year of the dragon. Circus performers from the farthest reaches of the earth have assembled to showcase their astounding acts of bravery and astonishing athleticism. Ringling Bros. Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson presides over this fantastical celebratory tournament of circus
champions that brings together mystic dragon lore with authentic circus feats. Dragons is a never-before-seen blend of renowned spiritual and real life legends that can be found only at the greatest show on earth!

9/8 -Rebuild McKinley:  Run for the Playground – Rebuild McKinley “Run for the Playground” is a benefit 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ 1/2 mile Fun Run that will start at the McKinley Park Playground and wind through the scenic McKinley Park neighborhood with final half mile in McKinley Park (see course map). This race will raise funs to help rebuild the McKinley Park Playground, one-third of which was destroyed by fire in July 2012.

This is a family fun run so participants will not be individually timed. However, an ocial race clock will be at the finish line, and the top three men & women will receive awards. All finishers in the Kids’ 1/2 Mile Fun Run will receive ribbons. The race features a custom T-shirt (guaranteed to the first 500 entrants), food, beverages, music, and random drawing prizes.

9/8 – Mexican Soccer League Match at Raley Field – Mexico’s First Division League soccer visits Raley Field, when Club Atletico Monarcas Morelia take on San Luis FC. The two clubs will compete in an exhibition match at Raley Field, sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation. This will be the first time that professional soccer has been played at Raley Field
since June 12, 2010, when the San Jose Earthquakes took on Chivas USA.

9/8 – Celebrate Natomas – This event brings together the Sacramento community to celebrate our rich diversity and showcase all that Sacramento has to offer: from local businesses, to performance groups, to fun activities for children including carnival games
and bounce houses. Participants can sit and relax while watching local talents
perform or take a stroll and see what the many vendors have to offer. There will
be food trucks, a beer and wine garden, art gallery, and over 130 booths.
Perhaps most importantly, this festival is an opportunity for residents to come
out and mingle with neighbors and strengthen the bonds that make this a special
community.

9/8-9 – California Capitol Airshow – Thrills, chills, and jaw dropping excitement await you at the 2012 California Capital Airshow. Don’t miss the USAF Thunderbirds, fast jets, loud warbirds, colorful aerobatic performers, miles of displays, and so much more!

9/8-9 – Moovin’ & Groovin’ Skeletons at the Discovery Museum – The Discovery Museum Science and Space Center will be highlighting the human skeleton for this event! View a model of a human skeleton in the Bone Zone exhibit and learn what to eat to get healthy bones. Kids will be able to make a jointed, paper skeleton craft to take home as a souvenir. Don’t forget to bring a camera for pictures of your child in a skeleton costume. No bones
about it, this is a fun weekend activity for the entire family!

9/9 – California State Admission Day Celebration – Californians deserve a day to celebrate their great state. This special event is
in honor of California’s 162nd year of statehood. Visitors will enjoy patriotic live music, birthday cake, and ice cream provided by California State Parks, the State Capitol Museum and with financial support from the California State Capitol Museum Volunteer Association. Come one, come all and be sure to stop by the California State Capitol Museum located inside the Capitol that offers free admission all year long.

9/9 – Remarkable Reptiles at The Nature Center – Come to the Nature Center for a presentation on local reptiles. Enjoy viewing “biofacts” like skulls or shed skin and a live reptile too. All ages will enjoy this presentation.

9/9 – Grandparent’s Day at Fairytale Town – Join Fairytale Town and celebrate the 33rd annual National Grandparents Day. Families are encouraged to bring grandma and grandpa in tow and enjoy a day of play in the park. This is sure to be a fun event for the whole
family!

Grandparents receive free admission when accompanied with a child ages 0-12. This program is made possible in part by ScholarShare College Savings Plan.

9/9 – 35th Anniversary of the Old Schoolhouse in Old Sacramento – Admission Day is extra special this year because on that day in 1977, the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse was originally dedicated 35 years ago. To celebrate, they are inviting the public to the (always free!) Schoolhouse in the afternoon to showcase the successful programs and projects the Schoolhouse has completed over the years. Guests are encouraged to stop by and join the fun!
