Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss: Celebrate Around Sacramento this Thursday, March 2

imagesEveryone knows the beloved tales from Dr. Seuss and can recite many of his famous quotes, “Today you are you, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is youer than you.” His stories have carried through generations and are loved by children of all ages.  Some of his greats have been turned into family classic movies like The Lorax, Cat in the Hat and The Grinch are family favorites (to name a few).

This Thursday, March 2nd, you can celebrate his birthday with your children at one of Sacramento’s most loved destinations Fairytale Town (where classic story-book tales come to life at this ultimate children’s playground).  From 6pm-8pm (weather permitting) your family can celebrate the great Theodore Seuss Geisel’s 113th birthday!  Arrive in your pajamas and enjoy Dr. Seuss- themed activities throughout the park.  Arts and crafts, bilingual story times and fun activities will help your kids get to sleep at night with this “Books Before Bedtime” event.

Admission into Fairytale town is $4.75 for adults and children ages 2 and up.  Members and children ages 1 and under will receive 50% off admission with a donation on one new or gently used children’s book for donations to Reading Partners, a Sacramento non-profit literacy organization.Fairytale Town Concert Series

Depending on the weather, you may choose to celebrate Dr. Seuss indoors.   Barnes & Noble Bookstores, will also be hosting a “birthday party event” on Thursday, March 2nd.   Enjoy story time, games and activities all Seuss related.  Barnes and Noble locations and times vary; visit their website to find specifics at the location nearest you (Roseville, Sacramento, Folsom and Citrus Heights).

So whatever you choose to do remember:  “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose”.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss at Lakeshore Learning Center in Roseville this Saturday

Are you looking for a way to keep your kids entertained on the weekends during these wild stormy days?

There are many options (some are even FREE) to keep your kids engaged, creating and using their imaginations on those “boring” Saturday mornings. Lakeshore Learning Center in Roseville has FREE crafts for kids every Saturday. Each Saturday, you can drop in to the store and have your child create one of their “crafts of the day”.  Every week is something new…and this weekend (February 25), your child can even celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday at a special Birthday Bash!

Beginning at 3pm, kids can enjoy an afternoon of crafts, games and rhyming away with the great Dr. Seuss.  They will have activities, gross-motor games and hourly readings of the classic Dr. Seuss books.

During the mornings, from 11am-3pm, kids can create a one-of-a-kind craft.  Here is a list of the upcoming activities:

Celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday at Barnes and Noble Bookstores

This Saturday, February 27 you can celebrate his birthday with your children at one of Sacramento area Barnes and Nobles Stores.

This special story time event will be held at the Natomas, Arden and Roseville Barnes and Noble locations.  Starting at 11am, your child can pin the tail on Horton, decorate their very own “Cat in the Hat” hat and listen to the beloved tales of Dr. Seuss.  Additional games and activities will vary depending on location.

So grab your kids and head to Barnes and Noble this weekend to celebrate the very special Dr. Seuss’s birthday at this fun-filled event

Sacramento Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday All Week Long

One FishToday is a special day. it’s the birthday of famous children’s book author Dr. Seuss! Theodore Seuss Geisel authored some of the most beloved children’s books of all time. Forty-six of them, to be exact. Who hasn’t read Green Eggs and Ham to their kids? How about Hop on Pop or Horton Hatches the Egg? Kids and adults LOVE these books – the clever rhyming, the colorful images, and of course, the positive messages. Celebrate this wonderful man all week long here in Sacramento. Take a look at the birthday events going on around town.

3/2 – Read Across America Storytime at Barnes & Noble – Join Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Natomas for a fun family evening celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Your kids will enjoy storytime and activities.

3/3 – Read Across America: Pajama Storytime at Rio Linda Library – Let’s celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss with a pajama storytime in the library. Special guests will read their favorite books, we’ll serve a bedtime snack, and sing a lullaby. Jammies, slippers, and favorite stuffed animals are encouraged. This program is sponsored by the Friends of Rio Linda Library.
3/5 – Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Read-a-thon and Party at the North Highlands-Antelope Library – Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ 111th birthday with reading and listening to your favorite Seuss’ stories such as Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs & Ham, the Lorax and others. We will enjoy even more activities and prizes this year and don’t forget–there will be plenty of cake and Grinch Punch. Teen and parent volunteers are welcome! Free admission.

3/5 – Dr. Seuss Party at McKinley Library – Come celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with this Dr. Seuss-themed party! We will read a Dr. Seuss story, make slimy oobleck, create our own Dr. Seuss crafts and creations, and enjoy Dr. Seuss-themed snacks.

3/7 – A Seussical Celebration at Pocket Library – You’re invited to a special celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday (March 2). Sacramento Public Library Director Rivkah Sass (and her sidekick Abe), former City Councilmember Robbie Waters, Lt. Terrell Marshall, and award-winning author JaNay Brown-Wood will share some of their favorite stories.

3/14 – Dr. Seuss Party at Ella K. McClatchy Library – Come celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday the this Dr. Suess-themed party! We will read a Dr. Seuss story, make slimy oobleck, create our ownDr. Seuss craft and creations and enjoy Dr.Seuss-themed snacks.

2/27 – 2/28 – Blast from the Past: Rockin’ Rocks and Diggin’ Dinos at the Discovery Museum – Rocks are a fascinating artifacts from the past that have a lot to tell you about Earth’s ancient–and not-so-ancient–history. Interactive displays will give visitors a real science encounter with rocks, crystals, and fossils of all kinds. The basics of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks are presented in an engaging, hands-on style using large, attractive specimens. Displays include volcanoes, floating rocks, magnetism, fluorescence, and rocks under different magnifications.  The museum will also focus on how professional paleontologists who “dig dinos” for a living do their work. Learn about Mary Anning and Roy Chapman Andrews, prominent paleontologists from the past.

2/28 – 3/1 – Gulliver’s Travels – The visual arts department invites you to come take a journey with the most unlikely of tour guides in our fantastical remake of Gulliver’s Travels. Along the way you will hear Gulliver’s telling of the fantastical lands, people, and creatures that he met. Hop aboard for adventure! Experience this giant size expedition through the eyes of visual artists. Giant puppets, shadow art, digital projections, dancing horses, elephant size snails and tiny Lilliputians
await your arrival on this most fabulous adventure!

3/1 – CJ the Sumatran Tiger’s 1st Birthday at the Sacramento Zoo – Join the celebration of CJ the Sumatran Tiger’s first birthday! CJ will receive a birthday cake-shaped enrichment while visitors watch and share their well wishes. Activities during the day will include signing CJ’s birthday card as well as tiger activities and conservation information.

3/1 – Healthy Kids Expo at Arden Fair Mall – Join Radio Disney for some fitness and fun including a circuit training course offering fun ways to exercise. Plus, Sutter Health physicians will measure height and weight for kids and distribute healthy tips to stay active.  Get your passport stamped along the way for fun prizes!

3/1 – Happy Heart Healthy Eating Day at the Sacramento Children’s Museum – Incorporating healthy habits with fun activities is important for children and adults alike! Sacramento Children’s Museum is hosting Happy Heart, Healthy
Eating Day to promote healthy eating and good exercise habits for museum attendees.

3/1 – Something’s Fishy at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Get “schooled” on our region’s local fish and learn the ancient Japanese art of Gyotaku (with rubber fish)! Materials provided and guests will get to take your fish prints home.  Space is limited; sign-ups will be taken the day of the event.

31/ – 3/2 – Snarly Saber-Tooths at the Discovery Museum – Check out a fun weekend of prehistoric mammals! The museum is highlighting a favorite, the snarly Saber-tooth cat. Look at a replica skull in the Blast from the Past! exhibit. Fun facts about these wild cats will be shared in the family feature. After constructing a mask, kids might snarl and growl like a
Saber-tooth, so watch out!

3/2 – Get Growing at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Take a walk to look for seedlings on the trail, then sow your own seed to take home!

3/2 – Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Celebration at Fairytale Town – Celebrate Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday with popular Seuss-themed hands-on activities and crafts. Stop by the Mother Goose Stage for a unique nonstop read-aloud of your favorite tongue-twisting, rhyming Seuss books.

3/2 – Sacramento Comic, Toy and Anime Show -The Sacramento Comic, Toy, and Anime show (Sac-Con) is Sacramento’s original Comic-Con, providing family friendly pop-culture entertainment for over 25 years. Highlights include a huge vendors room, small press zone featuring talented local artists, panels and workshops hosted by celebrity guests, cosplay costume contest, charity raffle benefitting local charities, and much more.  Celebrity guests include Kevin Eastman (artist and creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Sergio Aragones (Mad Magazine artist and creator of Groo the Wanderer), James O’Barr (creator of the Crow), and many more.

This Sunday, March 2nd , you can celebrate his birthday with your children at one of Sacramento’s most loved destinations Fairytale Town (where classic story-book tales come to life at this ultimate children’s playground).  From 11am-3pm (with the price of admission into the park) your children can hear nonstop reading of the favorite colorful, tongue-twisting tales of Dr. Seuss at the Mother Goose Stage.  Along with the stories being told, Runaway Stage Productions will be performing excerpts from “Seussical, The Musical”  in the Children’s Theater at 11:15 and 11:45.

annie-jr_category3/1-3/3 – Annie Jr. at the 24th Street Theater – Young Actors Stage presents the family classic Annie Jr. based on the popular and award winning Broadway musical. Spunky, depression-era orphan, Annie is determined to find her parents and sings and dances her way to our hearts. From the New York City orphanage run by Miss Hannigan, to the mansion of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, you’ll see Sacramento kids performing classic favorites, “Tomorrow,” “Hard Knock Life,” and “Little Girls.”  This family-friendly favorite is perfect for all ages.

3/2 – Sacramento Undy 5000 5k Walk/Run – Grab the kids and grab the dog, but leave your pants at home. Run in your underwear while raising awareness of colon cancer. Instead of race day T-shirts, all registered participants receive a commemorative pair of Undy 5000 boxers. It is a family-friendly event open to all ages. There is also a one-mile fun run. A giant, walk-through inflatable colon will make its appearance at the event!

3/2 – Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Celebration at the Old Schoolhouse Museum – Visitors to the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum can celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with fun (and free) activities all afternoon.  In addition to copies of many of Dr.Seuss’ children books that will be on-hand for reading, informative political editorial cartoons about World War II will be available along with a visually compelling “The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss” art book for perusal.  Plus, kids will have the opportunity to try on a fun “cat’s hat”!

Members of Girl Scout Troop 2153 from Arden Park in Sacramento will be hosting several healthy eating-related activities as well, including a puppet show.  This event is supported by a grant from the Newman’s Own Foundation.

3/2 – Family Activity: Ssssssnakes at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center – Where do these scaly creatures go when the sun does not shine? Learn about the life of a snake and get a chance to meet one of these cold-blooded critters up close.

Visit with our friend, the Cat in the Hat, for a photo opportunity you can’t pass up. He is appearing in the Family Feature. Share the stories of Dr. Seuss with your children by bringing them in for story times taking place throughout the day. A themed craft will also be provided for children to make and take home.
