Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss: Celebrate Around Sacramento this Thursday, March 2

imagesEveryone knows the beloved tales from Dr. Seuss and can recite many of his famous quotes, “Today you are you, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is youer than you.” His stories have carried through generations and are loved by children of all ages.  Some of his greats have been turned into family classic movies like The Lorax, Cat in the Hat and The Grinch are family favorites (to name a few).

This Thursday, March 2nd, you can celebrate his birthday with your children at one of Sacramento’s most loved destinations Fairytale Town (where classic story-book tales come to life at this ultimate children’s playground).  From 6pm-8pm (weather permitting) your family can celebrate the great Theodore Seuss Geisel’s 113th birthday!  Arrive in your pajamas and enjoy Dr. Seuss- themed activities throughout the park.  Arts and crafts, bilingual story times and fun activities will help your kids get to sleep at night with this “Books Before Bedtime” event.

Admission into Fairytale town is $4.75 for adults and children ages 2 and up.  Members and children ages 1 and under will receive 50% off admission with a donation on one new or gently used children’s book for donations to Reading Partners, a Sacramento non-profit literacy organization.Fairytale Town Concert Series

Depending on the weather, you may choose to celebrate Dr. Seuss indoors.   Barnes & Noble Bookstores, will also be hosting a “birthday party event” on Thursday, March 2nd.   Enjoy story time, games and activities all Seuss related.  Barnes and Noble locations and times vary; visit their website to find specifics at the location nearest you (Roseville, Sacramento, Folsom and Citrus Heights).

So whatever you choose to do remember:  “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose”.

Fairytale Town Showcases Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators At The Children’s Book Festival

By Alyssa Green

If you have been following our blog for a while, you are probably aware that we are huge Fairytale Town fans.  We love the quaintness of the park, the wonderful family centered events happening year round, and most of all, the life-long memories created in the children who visit.  If your family loves to visit Fairytale Town as much as mine, you will want to drop by the park at the end of the month for the ScholarShare Children’s Book Festival.

Sponsored by ScholarShare College Saving Plan, admission into the park on both Saturday and Sunday, September 29th & 30th is FREE!

So, what happens at this annual book festival?  Well, in addition to running the crooked mile, being magically transported to the ball in Cinderella’s carriage and exploring the Sherwood Forest, your child’s love of reading will be sparked (or renewed) as they see dynamic presentations and storytelling performances from best-selling children’s book authors and illustrators.  There will also be hands-on literacy activities, a book fair and information booths.  Did I mention that admission to this event is FREE?!

This is such a wonderful opportunity to meet and greet your favorite authors and illustrators.  Just a few of the weekend’s featured artists will be author Bob Barner (“Dem Bones” & “Bugs, Bugs, Bugs,”) illustrator Kenneth Spengler (“Kissing Coyotes” & “Way Out In The Desert,”) and best-selling author Dawn Wynne presenting “I Remember When…”  Click here to see the entire list of authors and illustrators.

As with all free events (especially at Fairytale Town,) I would encourage you to go earlier in the day, as it’s bound to be an extremely popular place to be.  See you at the end of the month!

When:  Saturday, September 29th and Sunday, September 30th – 10am to 4pm

New! Storytime Page

By Alyssa Green

Happy New Year!  We thank all of our loyal Sacramentokids.net readers for making 2011 a fabulous year for kids and families here in Sacramento.  It’s now time to move on to a new year and we welcome 2012 with open arms!

We continue to make little changes here and there to our blog, with the hope that each change will bring you new information about our wonderful city.

Our first change for the new year is the addition of our new Storytime page to our main menu.  We have done our best to compile a list of Sacramento area locations that offer storytime for kiddos.  While most are FREE, the museums do require that you pay an admission fee or be a member.  Once inside the museum, the storytime is FREE.

Click here to see the new Storytime page.  Next up:  Look for our new Library Roundup coming soon!
